Les stromatolithes, également appelées microbialite, sont l’une des manifestations des premières traces de vie sur la Terre. Ce sont des roches laminées qui résultent de la dégradation des premiers microorganismes, en milieux marins et en eau douce continentale. Ce sont en quelque sorte des fossiles de ces microorganismes ou «tapis microbiens », qui ont contribué à l’oxynégation de la biosphère terrestre. Ils sont une structure caractéristique laminée (rayée) ou rubanée, souvent constituée de calcaire ou de silice, mais pas seulement. Ainsi, l’oeil de fer est une forme de minerais de fer rubané («Banded Iron Formations»), caractéristique des bactéries oxydant le fer.

Stromatolites, also called microbialites, are one of the earliest evidence of life on Earth. They are laminated rocks resulting from the degradation of early microorganisms in marine and freshwater environments. They are, in a way, fossils of these microorganisms, or « microbial mats, » which contributed to the oxygenation of the Earth’s biosphere. They have a characteristic laminated (striated) or banded structure, often composed of limestone or silica, but not exclusively. For example, the « iron eye » is a type of banded iron formation, characteristic of iron-oxidizing bacteria.
